The Bond medicine interview: no UCAT, a psychometric gate and a format Bond does not publish

Bond is the outlier in Australian medical admissions. There is no UCAT ANZ and no GAMSAT. Instead, a proctored online psychometric test stands between your academic record and an interview, and Bond states that "All candidates will be ranked for interview based on their Psychometric Test (Stage 2 of Bond’s 4-Stage Selection Process)."

The other thing that makes Bond unusual is the calendar. Its interviews sit on 9 to 12 March 2027, three months after most school-leaver interviews have finished and two months after ATAR offers have gone out elsewhere. If you are holding a place somewhere else by then, Bond's process is still running.

The four stages, and what each one actually decides

Bond's process is a sequence of hurdles rather than a weighted score. Its entry requirements page sets out three assessment steps and its FAQ names a fourth, the offer itself. What matters for preparation is that each stage is judged on its own, and the thing that carries you into the interview is not your academic rank.

What Bond does publish about the interview

Bond's entry requirements page gives the purpose of the interview in one sentence: "Interviews will be held online to examine general suitability to medicine and preparedness to undertake a highly demanding course." That is the whole published description of what is being assessed. Everything else Bond says about the interview is logistics.

The two official pages that disagree on length

The 2027 calendar, which runs later than anywhere else

Bond takes two intakes a year, in May and September, from a single selection round. That is why the whole sequence sits in the first quarter of 2027 rather than in late 2026. QTAC applications open on 5 January 2027 and close on 19 January 2027, and every domestic applicant applies through QTAC regardless of whether they live in Australia or overseas.

Undergraduate and graduate applicants: one process, two QTAC codes

Bond splits its intake into an undergraduate stream under QTAC code 020712 and a graduate stream under 020741, and states that it offers 80 per cent of places to undergraduate applicants and 20 per cent to graduate applicants, from up to 180 domestic places across the two commencements. An undergraduate applicant is one who has completed a senior secondary certificate with or without incomplete tertiary study, and a graduate applicant is one who has completed a bachelor degree.

Both streams sit the same psychometric test, attend the same online interview on the same March dates, and are assessed through the same four stages. What differs is the metric that gets you to Stage 2. Bond publishes indicative minimums to be competitive for psychometric test selection of an ATAR of 96 or above, OP 1 to 3, or an IB Diploma of 38 or above for undergraduate applicants, and a cumulative GPA above 6 on a 7-point scale for graduate applicants.

The two pathways that run outside this process

The First Nations Australian pathway

Bond runs a First Nations Australian pathway into the Medical Program that is initiated automatically when you identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent on your QTAC application. It adds two things to the standard sequence: a Candidate Statement, used by the University's First Nations Health Lead or delegate to shortlist applicants, and a First Nations Australian Community-Based Interview in addition to the standard Medical Program interview.

Bond lists five inputs into the decision: academic ability, psychometric testing, the interview, the First Nations Australian Candidate Statement, and the First Nations Australian Community-Based Interview. No weighting is given between them, and no date, format or duration is published for the Community-Based Interview. Confirmation of Indigeneity is requested by the Office of Admissions after the QTAC application, and must be returned within 14 working days.

Year 2 lateral entry, and the only route open to international students

Bond also admits students directly into Year 2 of the Bachelor of Medical Studies from a set of its own programs: the Bachelor of Biomedical Science in the Pre-Health Professional major, the Master of Occupational Therapy, the Doctor of Physiotherapy, the Master of Nutrition and Dietetic Practice, and in some cases the Master of Healthcare Innovations. The published minimum is a GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 on the Bond grading scale.

This route does not go through QTAC. It begins with an expression of interest, and Bond states that applications usually open in June and close in late September, with psychometric testing and interviews conducted in October. Selection follows the same three steps of academic assessment, psychometric test and interview. One rule is published here that is not published for the main program: Bond states that "Final offer is determined by the interview results only."

Preparing for an interview whose format is not published

Prepare the room, not a station circuit

Because the format is unpublished, rehearsing a six-station or eight-station circuit is guesswork. What is certain is that the interview is online, that you must be alone, that you need photo identification and your confirmation QR code, and that Bond runs technical checks on 4, 5 and 8 March 2027. Being fluent on camera, in a quiet room, with a tested connection is the part of this you can actually control.

Build range rather than a script

The only published statement of purpose is general suitability to medicine and preparedness for a demanding course. That is broad, and a memorised answer set is a poor fit for a broad brief. Practising a wide spread of scenario types, at both a short and a long clock, leaves you ready whether the day turns out to be a single long conversation or a series of shorter ones.

Remember your interviewers are working blind

Bond states that the interviewers do not have your results. Nothing you have already achieved is in the room, and no assessor is reading your answer against a strong academic record. That cuts both ways: an unimpressive academic profile does not follow you in, and a strong one earns you nothing until you speak.
