The Griffith GUMSAA: a recorded scenario interview, not a live MMI (2027 entry)

Griffith does not run a Multiple Mini Interview for its Doctor of Medicine, and neither Griffith nor GEMSAS calls its interview one. It runs the GUMSAA: a scenario-based assessment delivered online through a platform GEMSAS names as SAMMI, and for 2027 entry "tentatively scheduled for the period Monday 21 September to Friday 25 September 2026". Invited applicants choose their own date and time inside that window, and get practice recordings first.

The word "recorded" is ours rather than Griffith's, and it rests on one official sentence: "There will be opportunities for candidates to practice recording their GUMSAA interview before they undertake their actual interview." Griffith adds only that the GUMSAA is "held online each September". Plan for answers you record yourself, at a time you picked, on your own equipment. No page says whether an assessor is watching while you speak.

Even the name is unsettled. GEMSAS expands GUMSAA as the "Griffith University Multiple Station Admissions Assessment". Griffith's degree page and Pathways page say "Multi Station Admissions Assessment", and the Pathways timeline uses a third spelling, "Multi-Station". Only the acronym is stable, and only the acronym is worth memorising.

What the GUMSAA actually is

Getting invited and getting an offer are two different sums

Applicants conflate these constantly. At Griffith the interview does nothing to get you invited, and half of everything once you are. GEMSAS is blunt about the consequence: because selection is 50:50 GPA and GAMSAT, "there is no discrete cut-off point for GAMSAT", a strong GAMSAT can offset a slightly lower GPA and the reverse, and the GPA that gets you interviewed is likely to be significantly higher than the 5.0 hurdle.

Which pathway you are on changes the facts

Rural applicants (GURPAS)

The Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme covers MM 2 to MM 7 backgrounds: at least five consecutive years, or ten cumulative years, in an Australian rural area since birth, with boarding-school students able to qualify on the family address. You nominate GURPAS inside your GEMSAS application, which closes 29 May 2026 at 5pm AEST, and it does not force a bonded place: bonded and unencumbered Commonwealth Supported Places are spread across rural and non-rural applicants alike.

Two details repay care. GEMSAS describes the priority as access to the program. Griffith's degree page is more specific, giving eligible applicants "priority access to Griffith University selection interviews (GUMSAA)", so read it as priority at the interview-selection stage. And the two Griffith pages disagree on the Modified Monash vintage: the scheme's own page says 2023, the Pathways page says 2019. Near an MM 1 or MM 2 boundary, check both and ask Griffith. No rural sub-quota is published, only "a proportion" of the intake.

First Peoples applicants

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants do not sit the GUMSAA at all. GEMSAS lists it as "Not required for First Peoples", and Griffith's GUMURRII page confirms that First Peoples Health Pathway applicants are "not required to sit GAMSAT or attend the GUMSAA interview". Instead there is a panel interview including the GUMURRII Student Success Unit, the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Indigenous) and the MD Program Director. GPA 5.0 or higher in a completed or final-year bachelor or key degree still applies, confirmation of Aboriginality documentation not lodged with GEMSAS must reach Griffith by Friday 7 August 2026, and a $20,000 First Peoples Scholarship runs for the degree.

Bachelor of Medical Science provisional entry

Approximately 80 MD places a year are reserved for Bachelor of Medical Science students at Griffith and at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Graduates at GPA 5.5 or higher are guaranteed MD admission, with neither GAMSAT nor GUMSAA required, on a short window of its own: applications open Friday 31 July 2026 and close Monday 10 August 2026 for Trimester 1 2027. Getting into the Bachelor of Medical Science is the hard part: 30 places at Gold Coast and 30 at Brisbane South (Nathan), selection on ATAR with UCAT ANZ used only for second-order ranking inside an ATAR band, and a 2026 minimum adjusted ATAR at Gold Coast of 99.90. Those offers cannot be deferred.

International applicants

International applicants do not go through GEMSAS. They apply directly to Griffith, online or through a registered agent, with proof of English language proficiency plus a GAMSAT within four years or an MCAT within two. The MCAT is accepted on this route only. Up to 35 international places are listed for 2027, and offers cannot be deferred or transferred between campuses. Note what is missing: no page states whether international applicants sit the GUMSAA, another interview, or none.

What Griffith does not publish

Competing pages skip this section, because filling it in means admitting how little is on the record. Griffith and GEMSAS publish the shape of the GUMSAA and almost nothing about its mechanics.

How many scenarios there are, and how long each runs, is unpublished. There is no station count, no response limit, no total duration, no reading time, and no word on whether the prompt stays on screen while you answer. What SAMMI is goes unexplained, because GEMSAS names it once and Griffith's own pages never mention it, so there is no description, no device, browser, camera or bandwidth requirement, no identity check, and no contingency if it fails mid-interview.

Whether anyone is watching is left open. No page uses the words recorded or asynchronous, says whether an assessor is present, or says whether a response can be re-recorded, and the practice recording is just as thin, with nothing on whether it is compulsory, assessed, or capped at a number of attempts. How it is scored is unpublished too: no rubric, no domains or weightings, no assessor count per scenario, no minimum interview score, and no published cut-off rank.

On adjustments there is nothing at all, whether for disability, medical or accessibility needs, so no extra-time policy, no alternative format, no evidence requirement, no deadline and no contact point. Nothing covers whether you can obtain your GUMSAA score or rank afterwards, and there is no review process for the interview. The 21-25 September 2026 window is explicitly tentative, with no published policy for illness, clashes, time zones or an alternate sitting. Casper is never mentioned in Griffith's MD material, and on the GEMSAS interviews page it appears only for other schools, which reads as Griffith not using it, while no page says so in the negative.

Preparing for a format nobody has timed for you

Everything above is what Griffith and GEMSAS publish. This section is MedCoach's preparation advice, built around this specific format rather than generic interview tips.

Rehearse without an interviewer in the room

Most applicants prepare by running questions with a friend, which trains the wrong habits for a format where you record your answer. There is no nod telling you the point landed, no follow-up to rescue a thin answer, no natural conversational ending. Practise speaking to a lens, finishing a thought cleanly and stopping on purpose. Build answers that stretch and compress

Because no timing is published, you cannot rehearse to a fixed clock the way a UQ applicant can. Take one scenario and deliver it at two minutes and at five. If it only works at one length, it is a script rather than a structure. A structure that survives both, moving from the issue to the people affected to the competing considerations to what you would do and why, fits whatever the prompt turns out to be.

Treat the practice recording and your slot choice as part of the exam

The practice recording is your only official look at the platform, and since nothing is published about its technical requirements, do it on the machine, in the room and on the connection you will actually use. Then choose your slot deliberately: pick the time of day you speak best, and do not leave it to the last hours of the window, where there is no published contingency for illness or a platform failure.

Aim at the six qualities Griffith names

Griffith is unusually specific about what the scenarios test: communication, empathy and ethics, reflection, problem-solving, teamwork and decision-making. Questions are not released in advance and you are ranked solely on interview performance, so there is nothing to memorise. Reflection is the quality applicants most often leave out and the cheapest to add: say what you would take from the situation, not only what you would do in it.

Applying to more than one school is normal, and the formats differ far more than the acronyms suggest.
