The UOW Doctor of Medicine MMI: eight stations, Casper and admissions bonuses (2027 entry)

UOW interviews Doctor of Medicine applicants with a structured eight-station Multiple Mini Interview, held live online in the week commencing 17 September 2026. GEMSAS calls it "a structured 8-station process involving live interviewers". UOW confirms "a live online multiple-mini-interview (MMI) format". UOW's own timeline is wider than its prose, giving the window as 17 to 25 September 2026, so hold all nine days.

What makes UOW different is what that interview is worth. Once you clear the hurdles, GPA and GAMSAT stop counting. You are ranked for an interview on 50 per cent Casper and 50 per cent UOW MD Admissions bonuses, then for a place on 70 per cent interview score and 30 per cent bonuses. GEMSAS states it plainly: "GPA, GAMSAT, and Casper results are not included in the weighting formula for offer of a place".

One prerequisite ends an application on its own. Casper is half the interview ranking, and GEMSAS states that the 11 June 2026 sitting is "the LAST test result accepted for domestic applicants for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle". Note the calendar: GEMSAS applications close 29 May 2026, a fortnight before the last Casper you may sit.

The format, station by station

Getting an interview and getting an offer are two different sums

At UOW the two stages use different inputs, and a score that decides one is deliberately discarded at the other.

A GEMSAS application produces at most one interview: if invited, "you will interview at one medical school only", and your score is "standardised and may be used by your lower-preference medical schools". UOW leans on that. An interview sat elsewhere is substituted into its 70/30 formula, by a method nobody publishes. The national interview guide covers that machinery.

The pathway you are in changes the facts

UOW runs four routes into the MD, and they differ on what you sit, when you interview, and whether bonuses apply. Read the one that is yours.

Rural Entry Pathway

UOW states that "Rural Entry Pathway applicants are ranked separately to General Entry Pathway applicants": a separate merit list, not a bonus inside the general one. Eligibility needs MM2-MM7 residence for five consecutive or ten cumulative years, and a rurality adjustment is applied automatically in three tiers (MM2 regional, MM3-MM5 rural, MM6-MM7 remote), the most remote receiving the largest bonus. Tier sizes are not published. Classification follows the Modified Monash Model 2023, not the 2019 version one line of the Bonus Guide still cites.

UOW also guarantees an interview to applicants with demonstrated NSW rural origin who put UOW first preference and meet all minimum admission requirements. The Bonus Guide adds a step the web pages omit: you must claim Bonus 1 (UOW First Preference Applicant) and Bonus 8 (NSW Rural Resident, MM2-MM7) on the UOW Bonus Form. And it buys one thing: it "provides a guaranteed interview opportunity only", with offers still decided on MMI performance and bonuses. The interview is where rural applicants compete, not the gate.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway

This pathway does not use the formulas above: "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants who are applying to UOW medicine are not required to sit Casper or GAMSAT". Meet the GPA hurdle, provide a certified Confirmation or Declaration of Aboriginality, and you are offered an interview place. Applications run 2 March to 31 August 2026, direct to UOW. There are two interviews: the eight-station MMI, plus a UOW GSM Community interview with community members and UOW staff, "designed to explore an applicant's understanding of Indigenous health and social issues".

Both run on a rolling basis from late March to late September 2026, in the next available round after your application is complete, so applying early changes when you interview. UOW aims for 15 per cent of places to come through this pathway. Not published: whether the Community interview is scored, or how it weighs against the MMI.

International Entry Pathway

International applicants apply directly to UOW between 2 March and 31 August 2026 for 15 places, and "All international offers are full-fee paying places". The interview is the same eight-station live online MMI, in rolling rounds from late March to late September 2026. The ranking is simpler: clear the GPA and GAMSAT or MCAT hurdles and you are ranked for interview on Casper alone, then for a place on interview score alone. MCAT is accepted at 495 overall, no section below 123.

No school-leaver entry, but a Pre-Medicine guarantee

The UOW MD is graduate entry only. The nearest school-leaver route is the Pre-Medicine Interview Guarantee for final-year students and graduates of the UOW Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health: UOW first preference in GEMSAS, all minimum admission requirements, and a weighted GPA of 6.5 or above at assessment. It applies once, on your first eligible application, within two years of finishing the degree.

What UOW does not publish

Most pages about the UOW MMI write with more confidence than the evidence supports. Here is what no official source we checked actually says.

Station length is unpublished, as is any reading or planning time before a station, and so is the shape of the circuit: total duration, breaks, interviewers per station, whether actors or role-play feature, whether any station is written. No video system is named, no technical requirements or identity-check procedure are given, and nothing covers a dropped connection.

Scoring is equally bare. There is no scale, no rubric, no word on whether stations are weighted equally, and no minimum interview score. UOW does not release the number interviewed, the offers made per pathway, or last year's Casper and bonus thresholds, and nothing states whether an unsuccessful applicant can obtain a score, band or rank, or how to ask.

No process, evidence requirement, deadline or contact point is published for interview adjustments, whether extra time, a support person or captioning, at the MMI or at Casper. The only accessibility text concerns accommodations for the program itself. There is likewise no policy on illness, compassionate grounds, rescheduling, or time zones for overseas applicants.

Preparing for this specific format

Rehearse the same answer at two lengths

Eight stations is the one structural fact you can rely on. The minutes are not. So do not train to a single clock. Take one scenario and deliver a disciplined two-minute version and a fuller five-minute version. Practise at one length only and you will either run dry halfway or get cut off, and you will not learn which until September.

Treat the interview as 70 per cent of the decision

Inside the interview, your GPA, GAMSAT and Casper stop contributing entirely. Only the MMI and your bonuses rank you for a place, and the bonuses were fixed when the Bonus Form closed. The interview is the last variable you control, carrying more than twice the weight of everything left. Budget your preparation accordingly.

Practise live, online, in the room you will use

This is a synchronous video interview with real interviewers, not a recorded upload. Camera height, light from the front rather than a window behind you, a quiet room, and looking at the lens rather than your own thumbnail are all part of the performance. Do one full eight-station run back to back.

Read the blueprint literally

UOW names what it assesses: communication, an empathetic and ethical approach, a reflective manner, teamwork, and decision-making in clinical and community contexts, plus rural, regional and remote health care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Given a cohort that is 60-80 per cent rural and a 15 per cent target for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway, those last two are not decorative. Be specific about what you have seen or done.
