Does USyd medicine have an interview? 2027 entry explained

It depends which Sydney medicine program you are applying to, and there is no honest single-sentence answer. Here is the accurate version, cohort by cohort.

If you are a domestic applicant to the standard graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine, in the Metropolitan (Sydney) stream, not using a facilitated entry scheme, then no interview stage is published for 2027 entry. You are assessed on a GPA hurdle, ranked on your GAMSAT section scores, and asked to complete an online confirmation page. That is the cohort most people mean when they ask this question, and it is the cohort the popular answer is right about.

For everyone else it is wrong. The Dubbo stream, international applicants, the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme and the school-leaver double degree all have a published interview or interview-equivalent assessment.

How the domestic graduate-entry MD is actually decided

If there is no interview, something else has to do the ranking, and Sydney is specific about what. The guide states: "The scores for each section of the GAMSAT will be used to rank applicants. Overall GAMSAT scores and average GAMSAT scores will not be used in the assessment and ranking of applications."

GPA is a hurdle rather than a ranking component. Standard applicants need a minimum GPA of 5 on the UAC seven-point scale as at 4 June 2026, and rural-scheme applicants 4.5. Clearing the hurdle gets you considered; your GAMSAT section scores decide where you sit.

Two further points that surprise people. Sydney is not a GEMSAS school, so there is no consortium preference-ranking and no GEMSAS interview-offer mechanic here: you apply directly to the University, plus UAC for the GPA assessment. Sydney also does not use the UCAT ANZ for any medicine pathway. And Sydney will not publish GAMSAT cut-offs, stating that "Threshold GAMSAT scores from previous years are irrelevant to the current admission cycle and will not be published or provided."

The Dubbo stream interview

Sydney publishes that Dubbo applicants "are required to submit a personal statement and may be required to attend an interview to assess their interest, intention and aptitude for practising medicine in rural and regional areas." Applicants are selected for that interview on their admissions test results and personal statement, and the interview contributes to the final Dubbo ranking.

There is a wording conflict inside the same document that is worth knowing about rather than smoothing over. Section 2.5 hedges with "may be required". Section 4.1, describing how offers are made, speaks of offers being made "following satisfactory performance in the personal statement and interview", as though it has happened. The safest reading is that the interview is a real stage of the Dubbo process, with the University retaining discretion over whether any individual applicant sits one.

What is not published is the part everyone wants: Sydney gives no format, no station count, no duration, no date and no numerical weighting for the Dubbo interview. If you see any of those specifics quoted somewhere, they did not come from the University.

International applicants

The international process differs materially, and this is the cohort most poorly served by the general "Sydney has no interview" answer. The International Admissions Guide states that "Some international applicants may be required to attend an interview to assess their interest, intention and aptitude for studying medicine at Sydney Medical School. Applicants will be selected for interview based on their admissions test results."

The same guide is firmer elsewhere. Its section on how offers are made says offers are made on the basis of merit "as indicated by applicants' final rankings and satisfactory performance in the interview", and its application-steps diagram lists "Step 3 Attend interview if eligible" as a numbered step. Reading those together, an interview is a standard part of the international process applied to shortlisted applicants, and offers are conditioned on performing satisfactorily in it.

International applicants may also use the MCAT instead of the GAMSAT, with a minimum score of 500 for 2027 entry, and Sydney states it may use or weight scores in one or more sections of an admissions test rather than overall or average scores. Those weightings are not published. Neither is the interview's format, date, duration or weighting.

The school-leaver double degree has a group interview

If you are a school leaver applying to the Double Degree Medicine Program, the Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine or the Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine, there is definitely an assessment, and it definitely includes an interview. Sydney publishes it as an admission criterion: "Satisfactory performance in Assessment Day. Eligible applicants will be invited to attend an assessment process after ATAR (or other secondary education qualification) results are released. The assessment will be conducted online and will include both a group interview and a written assessment."

Two things that look like interviews but are not

The tie-break clause. Both 2027 guides carry the same sentence verbatim: "Should it arise that applicants are ranked equally, the University reserves the right to use an additional selection tool, such as an interview or Situational Judgement Test (SJT). The University will give these applicants due notice of these additional requirements." This is a reserve power conditional on equal ranking, not a scheduled stage. Sydney names no provider, no format and no trigger beyond equal ranking, and there is no published instance of it being used. It is not something to prepare for.

The Eligibility Assessment Meeting. This one is real but it is not a selection interview. It applies to applicants who have been excluded or suspended from a tertiary course, have previously commenced a medical program, or hold a deferred or suspended place in one. Sydney states that information provided during the meeting will be considered as part of the overall application and, if you are considered eligible, will not affect your ranking. If you are summoned to one, it is a probity conversation, not an MMI.

What this means for your preparation

If you are a domestic graduate-entry applicant to the Sydney metropolitan stream and Sydney is your only application, interview practice is not what will move your outcome. Your GAMSAT section scores will. That is an unusual thing for us to say, and it is true.

In practice almost nobody applies to one school. If you are also applying through GEMSAS, you are preparing for interviews anyway, and those formats vary enormously: a recorded interview with no live interviewer at Melbourne, an eight-station Zoom circuit at UQ, a six-station Zoom circuit at Monash. Sydney simply is not the school that decides whether you need to practise.

If you are in one of the cohorts that does interview at Sydney, prepare for the shape you actually face. Dubbo applicants should be able to talk properly about rural intent, and should expect their personal statement to be live material. Double degree applicants should practise speaking in a group, which is a genuinely different skill from answering alone, and should not neglect the written assessment.
