The Adelaide University MMI: six ten-minute stations on Zoom, and no published interview dates (2027 entry)

Adelaide University states that its medical interviews "will follow a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format, consisting of a series of scenarios and questions, with a minimum of six stations lasting 10 minutes each", with one interviewer per station. Delivery is settled and absolute: "All interviews will be held online over Zoom. There is no option for conducting interviews in-person, by telephone or via other video conferencing platforms, and any requests will be declined."

That is a more specific description than most Australian medical schools publish. So is the offer formula, which Adelaide gives as UCAT ANZ 20 per cent, interview 40 per cent and academic score 40 per cent. The gap is the calendar. Adelaide publishes the day your eligibility email arrives and the seven-day window in which you book, and then stops. The interview dates themselves are not on the page.

What Adelaide publishes about the MMI

Getting invited is UCAT alone. Getting an offer is 20:40:40

The two stages use completely different inputs, and Adelaide is explicit that your academic record plays no part in the first one. Interview invitations "are based on performance in the UCAT ANZ and do not consider an applicant's academic record". A strong ATAR will not rescue a UCAT that falls short, and Adelaide states that requests for special consideration on this point will be declined.

That headline rule has two named exceptions and one modification, all on the same page. Adelaide applies it "For all applicants, except Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway applicants and Northern Community Care Stream applicants", and for Rural Background applicants it adds a second sort: interview selection there "will also consider an applicant's Year 12 study location". Which of those four groups you are in decides what your UCAT is actually doing for you.

The 2027 timetable, and the date that is missing

The standard UCAT pathway

This is the route the format above describes. You sit the UCAT ANZ, apply through SATAC under ABP171 or the bonded code ABP271, are ranked on the UCAT alone, book inside the seven-day window, and sit at least six ten-minute Zoom stations. Your academic score then re-enters at the offer stage, worth 40 per cent alongside the interview.

Rural background applicants

Adelaide reserves approximately 41 places for students from a rural background, defined as living in a Modified Monash Model 2019 MM 2 to 7 area for at least five consecutive years or ten years cumulatively based on primary residence. Rural applicants still sit the UCAT ANZ and still apply through SATAC, with a Rural Entry Pathway Statutory Declaration uploaded within five days of lodging. The distinctive part is how interview places are filled. Adelaide sorts eligible rural applicants into four categories by where they did Year 12, and states that "Interview places will be filled by eligible candidates from Category 1, prior to the selection of any candidates from Category 2, and so on and according to UCAT score." Category 1 is a rural South Australian school, Category 2 any South Australian school, Category 3 a rural school in any state, Category 4 any school anywhere.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

This pathway does not use the MMI at all. Applicants apply through SATAC but are not required to sit the UCAT ANZ, and Adelaide states that "All eligible applicants will be invited to an interview." That interview is a panel of three to four people including academics, clinicians and alumni, with largely Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander panellists, and it runs for around 20 minutes across a number of scenarios and questions. Before the formal interview begins, panel members have a yarn with the applicant to put them at ease. An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statutory Declaration Form must be uploaded to SATAC within five working days of applying.

The Northern Community Care Stream

The Northern Community Care Stream trains students in Adelaide's northern suburbs with a view to working in the region, under SATAC codes ABP292 and ABP293. Applicants who apply only through this stream are not required to have sat the UCAT, and ranking works differently: "Applicants will be ranked using a weighted combination of their ATAR or IB score and interview score." Two eligibility rules cut hard. An applicant without an ATAR or IB score is not eligible, and anyone with any prior tertiary record is not considered. Applying for the stream does not stop you applying for the UCAT-dependent programs at the same time.

Eligibility is also geographic and documented. An applicant must have "completed their final three years of secondary school education at a school located within the Adelaide northern suburbs region", which Adelaide defines by a published list of 26 postcodes from 5010 to 5125, and must upload an NCCS Education Verification Form signed by the applicant before a witness and by the school principal or deputy principal, within five days of lodging the SATAC application.

The late-January round is narrower than it looks. It is only for applicants who have not already interviewed. If you applied for ABP171 or ABP271 in the same year and attended that interview, Adelaide carries the score across, and you "will not be required or invited to attend a second Medicine interview for the NCCS pathway". One interview does not travel in every direction, though: Adelaide states that "Interviews for Dental Surgery and/or Oral Health cannot be used for Northern Community Care Stream pathway Medicine preferences." And the invitation to the January round comes "on the basis of their ATAR or IB score alone", with satisfying the eligibility criteria and the minimum ATAR guaranteeing nothing.

What Adelaide does not publish

Adelaide is more forthcoming than most about the shape of the interview and less forthcoming about two things that matter just as much.

The first is the calendar. No current Adelaide University page we checked gives a date, or even a month, for the main round of interviews. Applicants are told when the booking system opens and closes and are then expected to learn the interview period from the booking calendar itself. If you are coordinating around another school's interview, that is a planning problem with no published solution.

The second is the upper bound on the interview. Adelaide publishes a minimum of six stations and never a maximum, so a candidate cannot know whether to expect six stations or ten, or an hour of interviewing or nearly two. Nothing is published about reading or thinking time inside a ten-minute station, about how the ten minutes is divided between prompt and response, or about whether any station involves an actor or a role play.

Scoring and support are both closed. There is no rubric, no scale, no minimum interview score and no cut-off rank, and feedback is explicitly refused. No page describes an adjustment process for applicants with a disability or accessibility need, names a contact for one, or sets a deadline to request it. Nothing states what happens if Zoom fails partway through a station, and nothing says whether interviews are recorded or what happens to a recording afterwards.

Some of the silence is deliberate rather than accidental, and Adelaide says so. It "does not disclose ATAR cut-off scores from previous years", warning only that while the minimum eligible ATAR is 90.00 the rank actually required is typically much higher. It will not alter a UCAT score for any reason, will not intervene in UCAT scoring or an alternative test date, and "will not comment on the competitiveness of your score". Place counts are equally vague outside the rural pathway: the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway and the Northern Community Care Stream are each described as having "a number of places" with no figure attached, and no interview date is published for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander round at all.

Preparing for a ten-minute station

Ten minutes is a conversation, not an answer

Ten minutes per station is twice Deakin's five and three minutes longer than UQ's seven. An answer built to fill five minutes will run out at minute four and leave you improvising in front of a single interviewer for six more. Practise going deeper rather than wider: state your position, then test it against the strongest objection, then say what would change your mind. That is what fills ten minutes honestly.

One interviewer changes the room

With a single assessor per station there is no panel to spread your attention across and nobody to pick up a thread you dropped. Adelaide draws its interviewers from a wide pool including alumni, health professionals and community members, so the person opposite you may or may not be a clinician. Speak to a person rather than to a rubric, and do not assume shared technical vocabulary.

Rehearsed answers are named as a risk

Few universities say this out loud. Adelaide does, warning that rehearsed replies rather than natural responses can diminish your overall performance. Take it at face value. Rehearse the structure and the judgement, not the sentences, and practise being interrupted or asked something adjacent so that a memorised opening is never load-bearing.

Set the room up for Zoom, because there is no alternative

Adelaide will not interview you in person, by telephone or on another platform under any circumstances, and it requires a private location with no notes and no other person present. Test the machine, the connection and the lighting you will actually use, in Adelaide time, on the day of the week you booked.
