The Flinders panel interview: 45 to 50 minutes, a $65 booking fee, and a hurdle you have to pass (2027 entry)

Flinders never describes its interview as a Multiple Mini Interview, and it administers its own admissions rather than going through GEMSAS. What it publishes is a semi-structured panel interview of roughly 45 to 50 minutes, using a common set of scenarios and questions for every applicant, conducted by a small panel that knows nothing about you beyond your name. It is also the only Australian medical interview we have found that costs money to book: a non-refundable $65 administration fee, payable when you choose your slot. And it is a hurdle before it is a weighting, because Flinders does not even calculate your weighted GPA unless you pass it.

Flinders sits outside the system that shapes most graduate-entry advice. The 2027 Domestic Application Guide states that "The application submission and assessment process is administered by Flinders University" and that applications are submitted directly to it, with no mention of GEMSAS anywhere. The interview it describes is "semi-structured and uses a common set of scenarios and questions for all applicants", conducted by a small panel and lasting "approximately 45-50 minutes". The words Multiple Mini Interview, MMI and station appear nowhere in the guide.

Two features make Flinders unlike anywhere else in the country. It charges to book: a non-refundable interview administration fee of $65, on top of a $160 application fee. And the interview is a hurdle, not just a weighting. Flinders states that "Applicants must pass the interview to be considered for selection" and that "wGPAs are calculated only for applicants who pass the interview", so an applicant who fails is out before their academic record is ever computed.

The interview is a hurdle before it is a weighting

Flinders weights three things equally for the final rank, and applicants read that as a three-way blend. The sequence matters more than the ratio. You are shortlisted on GAMSAT alone, you must then pass the interview, and only then does your academic record get calculated at all.

Sources: the 2027 Domestic Application Guide, Selection Criteria and Interview sections, and the Doctor of Medicine course page for the cut-offs. Two things follow. Your GPA does no work at all in deciding whether you are interviewed, and a strong GPA cannot rescue a failed interview because it is never calculated.

Sources: the application timeline in the 2027 Domestic Application Guide and the 2027-entry timeline on the course page, which was last updated on 3 August 2026 and records two extensions the June guide predates. Flinders footnotes the interview rows directly: "The interview timeline may change for the 2026-2027 admission cycle. Updates will be provided to applicants once confirmed." It also reserves the right to run later application or interview rounds. Where the two disagree, the course page is the later publication.

Where you sit it, and the 60-kilometre rule

Flinders decides your interview mode by distance rather than by preference. Applicants who live in Adelaide and the surrounding metropolitan areas are interviewed in person. Applicants who are interstate or "over 60 kilometres outside of the Adelaide metropolitan area may be interviewed online through the Microsoft Teams platform". The same rule runs in the Northern Territory around Darwin.

The word to notice is "may". The FAQ is firmer than the rule suggests, stating that applicants "are normally required to plan to attend the interview in person, wherever they reside" and will only be told which mode applies when they are invited. Flinders also states that the mode cannot be changed unless extenuating circumstances are demonstrated with supporting documentation. If you live interstate, plan and budget for a flight to Adelaide, and treat a Teams link as the good outcome rather than the expected one.

Sub-quotas decide which queue you are ranked in

Flinders ranks you for every sub-quota you qualify for and then makes a single offer under one of them. Because each sub-quota has its own pool and its own number of places, the same selection rank can be competitive in one and not in another, and Flinders says so directly.

Indigenous Entry StreamA separate route for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates who do not hold a valid GAMSAT, combining a one-week Preparation for Medicine Program and a ten-week online science course. Applications open in early November and close by the end of FebruaryPublishedConfirmed
Source: the 2027 Domestic Application Guide, and the Indigenous Entry Stream guide for that pathway. Flinders gives its own worked example: an applicant may rank higher in the Rural sub-quota and lower in the Flinders Graduate sub-quota, which makes an offer under the first more likely than under the second.

If you are a school leaver, this is not your pathway

Everything above describes graduate entry. Flinders also admits school leavers, into a six-year Bachelor of Clinical Sciences, Doctor of Medicine double degree, and that route publishes no interview at all. Its comparison table sets the two side by side: the undergraduate column's general entry requirements are ATAR + UCAT ANZ, and the word Interview appears only in the graduate column, alongside GPA and GAMSAT.

Flinders describes the structure plainly: "A Bachelor of Clinical Science/Doctor of Medicine allows school leavers to complete the double degree in 6-years." The first two years cover foundational biology, chemistry and the human body, and subject to progression requirements students continue to a guaranteed place in the MD. The published progression requirement is a minimum GPA of 5.0.

So a Year 12 applicant to Flinders is not preparing for the panel interview described on this page. The selection rank is built from ATAR and UCAT ANZ, and the interview arrives only for applicants who come back later through graduate entry. Applicants who miss the double degree are pointed to the Bachelor of Medical Science, Paramedicine and Public Health as pathway courses into the MD.

What Flinders does not publish

Flinders describes its interview more concretely than most Australian medical schools, giving a duration, a panel composition and a list of assessed qualities. What it withholds is everything about how the result is produced.

There is no scoring information at all. No scale, no pass mark, no statement of how the five assessed qualities are weighted against each other, and no indication of how far below a passing score a failed interview sits. Because passing is a gate rather than a ranking position, the absence of a published pass mark is the single largest gap in the Flinders process.

The gap is narrower than at most schools, because the GAMSAT cut-offs really are published. What is missing is a current one. The list on the course page is labelled 2026 entry and covers the main round of interview offers only, so a 2027 applicant is reading last cycle's threshold and Flinders says openly that it moves. Nothing is published for the SARM Program or the Northern Territory Medical Program in any cycle, because selection there also runs on priorities.

The interview day is thinly described too. Nothing states how many scenarios you face inside the 45 to 50 minutes, how long you get on each, whether there is reading time, whether the panel asks follow-up questions, or what the examination conditions actually consist of. Nothing covers what happens if a Teams connection fails partway through, and Flinders is explicit that requests for alternative dates will not be considered.

On adjustments, Flinders publishes a general commitment to reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities in the context of the course's inherent requirements. No page we checked sets out a process, a deadline or a contact for requesting an adjustment to the interview itself.

Preparing for 50 minutes with three people who know nothing about you

Everything above is published by Flinders University. This section is MedCoach's preparation advice, built around this format rather than around general interview technique.

Practise endurance, not sprints

Nearly an hour in one room with one panel is a completely different exercise from a circuit of short stations. There is no reset every eight minutes and no fresh assessor to make a new first impression on. Rehearse in single 45-minute blocks rather than in question-sized pieces, and pay attention to what happens to your energy and your sentence length in the last fifteen minutes, because that is where most candidates deteriorate.

Bring your own context, because nobody else will

Flinders tells the panel your name and nothing else. Your degree, your work, your rural background and your GAMSAT are all invisible in that room. Anything you want considered has to be introduced by you, briefly and without sounding like a recitation, and an answer that assumes the panel already knows what you studied will land on people who genuinely do not.

Rehearse the same scenarios twice, because everyone gets the same ones

Flinders uses a common set of scenarios and questions for all applicants, so the interview is standardised in a way an adaptive conversation is not. That rewards preparation on the fundamentals rather than on exotic material. Cover motivation, how you learn, how you communicate under pressure, how you behave towards others and how you make decisions, which are the five things Flinders names.

Treat the interview as a pass or fail first

The equal three-way weighting is real, and it only applies to applicants who pass. Before the interview is worth a third of your rank, it is worth all of it. Preparation that lifts you from a marginal performance to a solid one is worth more here than preparation aimed at an exceptional one, because the first change decides whether your GPA is ever calculated.

Flinders sits outside GEMSAS, so its calendar runs on its own schedule alongside the GEMSAS one. The national interview guide compares every Australian program, the interview offer and date guide sets out the 2027-entry timeline, and the Adelaide guide covers the other South Australian medical school, which runs a Zoom MMI of at least six ten-minute stations.
