The Deakin Doctor of Medicine MMI: six stations, five minutes each (2027 entry)

Deakin's Doctor of Medicine interview for domestic applicants applying through GEMSAS is a Multiple Mini Interview of up to six consecutive stations, five minutes each, held online in September 2026 for 2027 entry. The GEMSAS Deakin entry states that "applicants are interviewed at up to 6 consecutive stations with 5 minutes for each interaction", and Deakin's own course page repeats the same structure in its own words. Deakin also caps the round: "A maximum of 220 applicants will be interviewed."

Two rules sit on top of the score. You need a minimum overall score of 50% at the MMI, and any eligible applicant who scores less than 2 on a single station is put through a review. Clear both and the MMI is worth 50% of the aggregate that decides offers, in the General Entry Stream and in every Rural Training Stream tier alike.

If you are an international applicant, none of that applies to you. You apply directly to Deakin rather than through GEMSAS, and you sit a structured panel interview rather than an MMI, in one of three fixed 2026 rounds. That pathway is set out further down this page.

What Deakin publishes about the format

Deakin describes the MMI in two places and they agree, but both are short. The table separates what is published from what people assume. If the format itself is new to you, our guide to medical school interviews in Australia covers MMIs generally.

Getting invited is one sum, getting an offer is another

Deakin ranks applicants twice, on two different formulas, and readers routinely conflate them. Selection for the MMI comes first: "Applicants are selected for MMI based on their ranked order." Only afterwards is the final aggregate calculated with the MMI folded in at 50%. Invitations come by email, and you receive one interview offer only from a GEMSAS application.

Adjustments (bonuses) for rural or regional residency, prior clinical or work experience, financial disadvantage and previous Deakin study count towards the aggregate used for interview consideration, with no cap on the points awarded. Worth flagging, because the cycle-wide GEMSAS interviews page summarises Deakin's General Stream as standardised GAMSAT plus standardised GPA and never mentions adjustments. The school entry, the course page and the policy schedule all include them, and GEMSAS itself points readers to the school entries for detail.

One GEMSAS-wide mechanic matters here: "Your interview score is standardised and may be used by your lower-preference medical schools." A single MMI can feed more than one school's ranking.

Timing for 2027 entry

Which pathway you are actually on

Domestic graduate entry, and nothing else

The Deakin MD is "a four-year graduate entry program for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree". No school-leaver, provisional or assured pathway from a Deakin bachelor into the MD is published. You need a minimum weighted GPA of 5.0 in an approved bachelor, honours, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or masters by coursework. General Stream and RTS Tier 2 and 3 applicants also need a GAMSAT of at least 50 overall with at least 50 in each section. As a benchmark rather than a threshold, Deakin's 2026 intake averaged a GPA of 6.72 and a GAMSAT of 65.9.

The Rural Training Stream, which is a separate contest

Thirty domestic places are reserved for the Rural Training Stream, and a minimum 50% of all course places across both streams go to applicants meeting rural background criteria. RTS applicants are assigned a tier: Tier 1 is Deakin's rural footprint, Tier 2 is MM2-7 in rural Victoria, Tier 3 is MM2-7 elsewhere in rural Australia. Each requires "evidence of having resided for at least 10 years cumulatively or any five years consecutively after birth entirely within the nominated tier". Tier 1 applicants have both the GAMSAT and the ten-year degree recency requirements waived.

The written application is the piece that surprises people. It runs to a 1000-character limit per section, is assessed by rural community members alongside academics or clinical practitioners, and contributes 50% to the interview-ranking aggregate and 25% to the offer-ranking one. Half your chance of reaching the MMI is decided before you speak to anyone.

Three published consequences follow. To be considered for the RTS you must place Deakin first on your GEMSAS preference list, though you may still list others. Miss out in the RTS with a valid GAMSAT and you are considered for the General Stream automatically, with no second application. But decline an RTS offer and you forfeit General Stream consideration, and once enrolled, transfers out of the RTS are not possible.

The Indigenous Entry Stream

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can apply directly to the School of Medicine through the Indigenous Entry Stream, with any undergraduate or postgraduate degree and no GAMSAT. MD applications close at "5pm, Friday 31 July 2026". Applicants receive an aggregate score built from GPA, the IES application form and performance in an interview, must achieve a minimum overall interview score of 50%, and are offered places on rank order against the places available under the IES. Deakin never says whether that interview is the MMI. Applying through GEMSAS instead remains possible, though Deakin highly encourages the direct route.

Note the naming: the course page, the pathway page and the policy schedule all say Indigenous Entry Stream, while the School of Medicine "Study with us" page still heads the section "Indigenous Access Scheme". Search under the former.

International applicants sit a panel, not the MMI

International applicants "must apply directly to International Admissions at Deakin University", outside GEMSAS entirely. They may apply with GAMSAT (50 overall and 50 in each section) or MCAT (125 in each section), plus IELTS 7.0 overall with no band below 7.0, and are invited to interview on a 50:50 combination of admission test and GPA. The interview gets one published sentence: "Interviews are conducted by a panel, using a structured format." Afterwards, interview, test and GPA are combined 50:25:25 to set the final offer rank.

What Deakin does not publish

Every page that claims to describe this MMI in detail is filling gaps the university leaves open. Knowing where the gaps are beats a confident guess: it tells you what you will only learn late, and what to ask when the invitation arrives.

Start with the clock and the count. Five minutes covers "each interaction", and whether reading sits inside it is nowhere stated. "Up to 6" is a ceiling, so the number of scored stations, any rest station and the total time on the day are all unpublished, as is how the 220 interviews split between the General Entry Stream, the Rural Training Stream and the three RTS tiers.

How the online MMI runs is undescribed: whether it is live or recorded, on which platform, with what technical and identification requirements, and what happens if your connection drops. Deakin publishes no specific interview days, no notice period, no rescheduling policy, and no invitation cut-off score or rank, current or historical.

The scoring is thinner still. The "less than 2" rule implies a numeric scale whose range and anchors are never given, what the review does is not described, and the qualities list is explicitly "may include", with no mapping of stations to domains. The Indigenous Entry Stream interview is described only as "performance in an interview", and the RTS written application is worth half an interview rank with no published marking criteria.

Casper goes unmentioned in every Deakin MD source, neither required nor explicitly ruled out in writing. The "no feedback" line appears only on the international page, and no appeals process is published for anyone. Deakin invites applicants with a disability or ongoing health condition to email the School for a confidential discussion about the course and reasonable accommodations, but publishes no process, contact or deadline for adjustments to the interview itself. There are no sample stations, no briefing document and no orientation session for the online format.

The practical version: treat the invitation email as the technical brief you were never given, and ask the School directly about anything it leaves out.

Preparing for this particular format

Everything above is Deakin's published information. What follows is MedCoach's preparation advice, built from the specifics of this format rather than generic interview tips.

Five minutes is short, so land the answer in four

Five minutes per interaction is short, and it may have to absorb whatever time you spend reading. Rehearse reaching a position in the first thirty seconds and defending it with the rest, rather than building slowly towards a conclusion you never reach. Practise stopping cleanly, too: an answer cut off by a timer reads as unfinished thinking.

Treat every station as if it can sink the round

An MMI is usually forgiving by design: one bad station is diluted by the others. Deakin's published rule cuts against that, because scoring under 2 on a single station triggers a review regardless of your average. So play each station safe. Do not gamble one on a clever contrarian line, and never go silent on an unfamiliar scenario. A plain, structured answer beats nothing at all.

Rehearse online, in the room and on the machine you will use

The interview is online and Deakin publishes nothing about the platform or setup, so removing surprises is entirely your job. Sit at the actual desk, use the actual laptop and headphones, check your lighting and background, and practise speaking to a camera rather than to someone across a table. Six stations back to back on a screen is tiring in a way one mock interview never reveals.

If you are in the Rural Training Stream, keep your story consistent

Your written application is half your interview rank, it is read by rural community members as well as academics and clinicians, and commitment to rural and regional practice is on Deakin's published list of qualities the MMI may assess. Reread what you submitted before you interview. A rural motivation that reads one way on the page and another in the room is exactly the inconsistency an experienced assessor notices.
