The Monash medicine MMI: format, dates and preparation for 2027 entry

Monash selects medicine students with a Multi Mini Interview, and it states that the MMI is "conducted entirely online via Zoom". How many stations you sit depends on which pathway you are applying through: six stations for domestic applicants, whether school leaver or graduate entry, and four stations for international applicants.

For domestic school leavers, each station gives you two minutes of reading time and eight minutes of interview, ten minutes in total per station, and Monash puts the whole circuit at 70 to 80 minutes once pre-briefing and debriefing are counted.

How many stations, and how long

Every pathway is assessed against the same seven attributes. Monash lists them as advocacy, collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, ethical reasoning, motivation and resilience. With six stations and seven attributes, a station can cover more than one, and Monash describes each scenario as focusing on "one or more of the following domains".

How much the MMI counts

This is where the pathways separate sharply. The MMI is one of three equal components for direct entry, and the single largest component for graduate entry.

When Monash interviews for 2027 entry

Monash publishes exact interview dates rather than vague windows, which is unusual and genuinely useful. It marks these dates as subject to change, so treat them as firm plans rather than guarantees.

What it took to get an interview in past intakes

Monash publishes historical cut-offs, which is rare and worth reading carefully. These are the scores that were sufficient in past intakes, not thresholds for 2027, and Monash states that they change each year with the number of interview places and the spread of scores.

Which pathway you are actually in

Monash runs two separate medicine courses, and people routinely prepare for the wrong one. Direct entry is closed to anyone who has commenced tertiary study, including a Certificate IV or above. Monash states it is open only to applicants who completed Year 12 or the VCE equivalent no more than two years before starting, and directs everyone else to the graduate entry program.

• Direct entry is the Clayton, Bendigo and Malaysia course for school leavers, applied for through VTAC, using UCAT ANZ for domestic applicants and ISAT for international applicants.
• Graduate entry is a separate four-year course based at Churchill in Gippsland, applied for directly through my.application. Monash states that applicants are not required to sit the GAMSAT for this course.
• Graduate entry is restricted to graduates of named Monash degrees, plus the Bachelor of Biomedical Science from Federation University's Gippsland Partnership Program, with a Weighted Average Mark of at least 70. Monash reserves at least 70 per cent of places for Bachelor of Biomedical Science graduates, and states applicants can only be considered for entry twice.
• Sitting the direct-entry MMI does not use up your graduate-entry attempt. Monash states explicitly that if you previously interviewed for direct entry, you can be interviewed again for graduate entry.

Preparing for this specific format

Practise two minutes reading and eight minutes talking

Eight minutes on one scenario is a long time. It is much longer than the four to five minutes most MMI circuits give you, and it is the single biggest thing that surprises applicants who have practised against another school's format. A tight three-minute answer leaves five minutes of silence you will have to fill under pressure.

Use the two minutes of reading to plan an answer that can breathe: your position, the people affected, the considerations pulling against each other, what you would do, and what would change your mind. That last part is what fills the back half of an eight-minute station honestly, rather than by repeating yourself.

Treat the seven attributes as a checklist, not a theme

Monash names exactly what it is assessing: advocacy, collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, ethical reasoning, motivation and resilience. Very few schools are this explicit. Work through them one at a time and find a real experience of your own for each, because a station that asks about resilience will not be satisfied by an answer that is mostly about empathy.

Rehearse on Zoom, because that is the interview

There is no campus day here for any pathway. Your interview is a video call, so the room, the lighting, the camera height and whether you look at the lens rather than your own thumbnail are all part of your performance. Practise in the actual space on the actual laptop, and do at least one full-length run so you know what 70 to 80 minutes of concentration feels like.
