The University of Tasmania medicine interview: there is not one, and what decides your place instead

If you are searching for the University of Tasmania medicine interview, the answer is short. The University states on its own 2027 course page that "The University of Tasmania does not conduct interviews during selection for the Medicine Program."

That is not a gap in the published information. It is the policy, stated in one sentence, and it makes Tasmania the only Australian medical program that runs no interview for its mainstream domestic pathways. What replaces it is a straightforward ranking on numbers, and the rest of this page sets out which numbers, in what order, and the one pathway where an interview does exist.

What decides a place when there is no interview

Tasmania splits domestic applicants into two groups and ranks each on its own pair of numbers. Neither group meets an assessor. For school leavers, the University states that "This course uses ATAR and ATAR-equivalent scores (within 5 years of the course commencement date) as the primary ranking method for the admission process." and sets the bar at a minimum adjusted ATAR of 95.

The UCAT ANZ is required, but it does not rank you. Tasmania states that "All applicants require a valid UCAT ANZ score. Groups of applicants with the same ATAR will be ranked by using the UCAT ANZ score as a secondary ranking method." It uses the combined scores of the three cognitive subtests, excluding the situational judgement test.

The quotas that do most of the work

With no interview to differentiate applicants, the quotas carry more weight at Tasmania than at most schools. The largest is rural. The University states that "The University of Tasmania BMedScMD has a quota of 50% domestic rural students, (MM2-7 locations), including 25% from MM3-7 locations." Eligibility runs through the Rural Application Process, on the familiar test of five consecutive or ten cumulative years in a Modified Monash MM2 to MM7 area, and the maximum ATAR adjustment it carries is five points.

The Aboriginal Entry Pathway, which does interview

The University's course page notes that "An Aboriginal Entry Pathway exists to facilitate access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants to enter the Medicine Program." and links to a separate page. That page sets out prerequisites for two groups, Year 12 applicants and non-school leavers, and both lists end with the same item: "Interview with representative(s) of the Medicine Admissions Committee"

The pathway runs alongside the standard application rather than replacing it. The University states that the regular domestic student application process must also be completed, and that applicants complete an Aboriginal Entry Pathway application form in addition to it. Neither admissions test applies: "Please note, neither GAMSAT nor UCAT is required for applications under the Aboriginal Entry Pathway."

If Tasmania is your only application, stop here

There is nothing to rehearse. Your effort belongs in the UCAT ANZ or the GAMSAT, in the ATAR or GPA that does the actual ranking, and in getting your rural or Tasmanian quota evidence right before applications close on 30 September 2026. No amount of interview practice moves a Tasmanian application.

If Tasmania is one preference among several, it changes nothing about the others

Most applicants who list Tasmania also apply somewhere that interviews. The trap is treating a no-interview school as evidence that interviews matter less generally. They do not: the interview is worth 75 per cent at Western Sydney, 50 per cent at several others, and is a pass or fail hurdle at Flinders. Tasmania is the outlier, not the pattern.

Check the position each cycle rather than assuming it holds

A single sentence on a course page is what makes this true, and a single sentence can change. The page we read is the 2027 course year page, checked on 16 August 2026. Before you rely on there being no interview in a later cycle, open the course page for that year and look for the same sentence.
