The UWA Doctor of Medicine MMI: eight stations, and a panel for international applicants (2027 entry)

UWA interviews domestic Doctor of Medicine applicants with a multiple mini interview of eight numbered stations. Each runs seven minutes: two minutes to consider the question, then five minutes responding to a different interviewer at each station. UWA states the whole process, registration included, takes "approximately 70-75 minutes". The same wording appears on the Assured Pathway major's course page for school leavers.

International applicants do not sit that interview at all. They face a panel of two interviewers taking about 50 minutes including registration and introductions, with typically five MMI-style questions that are not individually timed. Same university, same course, two different interviews.

Either way, the interview is worth 50 per cent of the final ranking for non-rural applicants, making it the largest single component of a UWA offer.

Getting an interview and getting an offer are two different sums

Readers routinely conflate the two. Your academic record and admissions test decide whether you are invited. The interview then decides half of where you sit in the queue.

When UWA interviews for 2027 entry

Which pathway you are actually on

UWA has 206 domestic MD places plus 40 international, up to half of the domestic ones going to school-leaver entry and the rest to graduate entry. GEMSAS administers up to 103 domestic places for 2027, so a graduate applicant should size the odds against roughly a hundred places, not two hundred. The national interview pillar compares UWA with the rest.

Domestic school leavers

• Entry is via the Assured Pathway through TISC, closing late September, minimum ATAR 98 or equivalent. UWA states entry is not based solely on ATAR and the minimum is not a guarantee.
• The place is conditional on completing the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) with the Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major, at a selection GPA of 5.5 within the first two years.
• Interview spots are limited and allocated separately across the rural, Broadway UWA, WA school leaver and interstate pathways. Twenty school-leaver places go to Broadway school students.
• A school-leaver offer may be deferred a year, two with National Service obligations. A graduate MD offer cannot be deferred on UWA's own wording, so do not plan around it.

Rural applicants

• Around 30 per cent of domestic places are rural, and the rurality rating takes 25 per cent of the final rank, pushing the interview down from 50 to 37.5 per cent.
• Eligibility means a principal home address in Modified Monash areas MM 2 to 7 for five consecutive or ten cumulative years, evidenced on UWA's Rural Eligibility Form.
• Graduates declare rurality inside GEMSAS, with documentation to GEMSAS by 15 June 2026. School leavers lodge the form with their TISC application, giving school and residential history where graduates give residence only.
• Financial support may be available for rural students who need to fly to Perth to sit UCAT ANZ or attend an interview. Ask before booking flights.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

• Up to 10 per cent of domestic places are for Indigenous students, through a pathway that is not an MMI. Boola Boola Djinda describes a one-day panel interview assessment at the Bilya Marlee Building, with successful applicants notified within two weeks.
• GAMSAT is not required and ATAR is not a prerequisite. The academic floor is a GPA of 5 or above over the most recent three years, with conditional offers possible mid-degree.
• For the Assured Pathway, the 2026 domestic guide says Indigenous students need an approximate ATAR of 90, that the School of Indigenous Studies can recommend lower, and that UCAT ANZ is optional. The course page's eligibility list still shows UCAT, so confirm with the School.
• Ranking is attributed to the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health on the course page while the pathway is published under Boola Boola Djinda. Ask which office holds your application.

International applicants

• Around 40 places go to international applicants, who apply directly to UWA rather than through GEMSAS. Graduate rounds close 30 April and 30 June.
• You sit the two-interviewer panel, not the circuit: typically five MMI-style questions, no per-question timer, an overall limit, with the exact number confirmed to shortlisted candidates in UWA's preparation material.
• UCAT ANZ is not accepted for the International Assured Pathway. School leavers use ISAT instead, at or above the 25th percentile in both sections.

What UWA does not publish

UWA is unusually generous about format and unusually quiet about assessment. Every page claiming to know the rest is guessing. Here is what is genuinely missing, so you can stop hunting and start asking.

Scoring is the biggest gap. There is no rubric, scale, per-station weighting, aggregation method or minimum interview score, and nothing says whether all eight stations are scored or whether one weak station can be offset by the rest. The cut-offs are withheld too. The graduate rank that earns an interview is not published, and the school-leaver UCAT threshold is withheld deliberately, because "Minimum results from previous years are not published as these do not provide meaningful predictive information for future applicants." Nor is the number of interviews offered per quota.

Delivery for school leavers is unstated, since whether the 30 November to 11 December round runs on campus or online is never said, and for the online graduate MMI nothing covers the platform, bandwidth, dropouts, recording or ID checks. Station design is equally quiet, with nothing on rest stations, themed stations in a fixed order, or whether the written question arrives on paper or a screen, and nothing on who the interviewers are, whether clinicians, academics, community members or students.

There is no feedback or appeals policy at all, and no reconsideration process for an interview outcome, so nothing says whether you can obtain your score or your rank. On adjustments, UWA publishes an inherent-requirements process for the course and UCAT ANZ runs Access Arrangements with a 15 May 2026 deadline, but neither covers MMI day: extra reading time, rest breaks, an accessible venue, an interpreter. Casper is never mentioned in any UWA source or in UWA's GEMSAS entry, which lists it only against other schools, which strongly suggests UWA does not use it, though no page says so in the negative.

If any of these matter to you, and adjustments will, email UWA Admissions well before your interview period rather than raising it on the day. Ask in writing: what adjustments can be arranged, what happens if you are ill on your allocated date, and whether feedback is available afterwards.

Preparing for this specific format

Everything above is UWA's published information. What follows is MedCoach's advice. UWA's own view comes first: its 2026 domestic guide recommends you "focus on your high school and admission test preparation (or achieving a high GPA and admissions test score) as interviews are only offered to those who score at a certain ranking based on those assessments." That is right about getting invited, and silent on the half of your rank the interview decides.

Five minutes is shorter than it sounds, and entirely yours

Five minutes per station sits at the brisk end of Australian MMI formats. The UQ circuit gives seven minutes and Monash eight, so an answer built for those runs past the buzzer here. Harder still, UWA states interviewers are not required to read the question out and may or may not ask follow-ups. Plan for a station where nobody prompts you: if your practice relies on someone asking "and why is that?", five silent minutes will feel long.

Use the two minutes to decide, not to re-read

The question comes in writing, so you are not spending those two minutes decoding speech. Spend them choosing a structure, a first sentence and an ending. Applicants who re-read instead arrive at five minutes of improvisation.

Work the attribute list one at a time

UWA names ten attributes: accountability, ethical and moral judgement, communication, management skills, problem solving, self-awareness, teamwork and collaboration, conflict resolution, empathy and resilience. The wording is "include", so it is not exhaustive, but it is more than most schools publish. Find a real experience of your own for each. A conflict-resolution station is not satisfied by an answer mostly about empathy.

Rehearse eight fresh starts, not one long conversation

A different interviewer sits at every station, in numbered order. Nobody carries a good impression forward from station three, and nobody carries a bad one either. The skill is resetting: closing off one scenario and opening the next as though it is the first thing you have said all day. Do one full-length run to feel what 70 minutes of that costs.
